When it comes to church communications, you may think there’s nothing that really separates you from other church ministries. I can understand that to a certain level. But I also think there are some really unique aspects of serving in church communications and you must remember this significance. Here are three important things to remember.
1. You control the front door of your church.
Whether it’s the website, facebook, instagram, the road sign in front of your church, or even the poster board that you just bought, you control that front door of the church. Regardless of whether the “door” is online or physical, you control it. That’s a lot of power and a lot of responsibility! People’s first interaction with your church is typically going to be through your website or driving by and seeing the road sign. However visitors first see your church — you control what they view.
2. No other ministry has the same kind of reach.
This isn’t to be arrogant or to say that other ministries don’t matter. But what I am trying to say is that you have an unbelievable reach in your ministry. Realistically speaking, your Facebook post will probably reach more people than those sitting in your seats on a Sunday morning. Most likely, more people will visit your website than those who come through the front door of your church.
3. Church communication is always evolving.
This isn’t an area that is static. The great thing about church communications is that the rules for each digital platform are always constantly changing. Facebook doesn’t look the same way it did five years ago, and it won’t look the same as it does today five years from now! And since the field is constantly evolving, you also need to have a constantly evolving skill set. Change is the nature of this field.
When you look at these three things and everything that they impact, you can clearly see why church communication matters now and to the future of your church and ministry.
